Workout apps for friends: four proposals to consider

First agree on what the group needs. These four proposals take different paths through logging, sharing activity and organizing competition.

Who publishes this guide

The Rally team publishes this guide and includes Rally among the options. Official sources were reviewed on October 20, 2026. We assign no ranks and do not present an independent product test.

Rally: a competition every week

Rally proposes logging workouts with friends, sharing activity and following a weekly leaderboard. It can fit a group that wants a visible commitment and another competitive period each week.

Test invitations, the first log and points. Rules you agree outside the app do not automatically change its scoring.

GymRats: challenges and accountability groups

Its official website proposes starting a challenge or an accountability group and sharing activity with friends. Review the period, what counts and what functions each person needs.

Strava: activity goals and challenges

Strava documents challenges with different goals and group challenges with a goal and duration. Check creation and participation conditions; the help consulted requires a subscription to create group challenges.

Hevy: logging, routines and social activity

Hevy presents workout logging and routine planning, plus following people, commenting on workouts and sharing routines. Test the logging detail and what a friend can see if those are your needs.

A practical way to choose

  • Write down whether you want a routine, a commitment or a competition.
  • Check the group’s phones and current conditions of the functions you need.
  • Try an invitation and a workout record before moving your whole history.
  • At the end of the trial, check whether everyone could participate and understand the outcome. The free planner can prepare an agreement even if you choose another tool.
