Getting started

How to work out with friends on different schedules

Working out together can mean supporting each other throughout the week. You do not need the same routine or location.

First choose what to share

Some groups want a gym partner; others want someone to see their commitment. Discuss that before choosing an app or opening another chat. A leaderboard alone will not resolve different expectations.

Ask what would help each person follow through this week: a visible record, an encouraging message or a conversation at the end. Agree on welcome support and reminders people prefer not to receive.

Individual goals, one shared place

Routines and availability can differ. Choose personal commitments that respect those differences. Comparing everyone by weight lifted or distance covered excludes different activities and goals.

Choose a place to log and view activity. Rally provides friends, groups and a weekly leaderboard for sharing workouts. Website template rules remain your agreement and do not alter app points.

Close a week without creating a debt

Before starting, agree when to review. Look at the commitments each person chose and ask what they want to repeat. Someone can pause without exposing private details.

A difficult week does not require making up every session. Adjust the next agreement. Rally’s weekly leaderboard starts another competitive period; historical progress is separate.

A coordination example

  • On Sunday, agree on a start and share personal goals.
  • During the week, each person logs on their own schedule and offers encouragement when welcome.
  • At the review, decide how to continue. Rest and pauses belong in the agreement. This example is coordination, not a recommended exercise frequency.

Write the agreement down

Use the free challenge planner to prepare the text. If there are two participants or you share a gym, read the matching template before choosing your rules.
